Being a good networker isn’t something people are taught in the workplace or school, but it’s assumed that some of us are good natural networkers and others aren’t. Though this might be true to some extent, every person can improve their networking skills if they can avoid repeating the same networking mistake every time.

Networking can be termed to be invaluable in the business world because it provides opportunities to tap into the knowledge, skills, and connections of people outside of your immediate professional circles. Most of the professions now engage networking skills as an ingredient for career success.

Quality Over Quantity Is Better: Anytime you’re out for networking business, always have quality over quantity behind your mind. Don’t be tempted to shove your business card into as many hands as possible because the quality of the connections you make is far more important than the quantity. Just one quality prospect can go very far in bringing other people to join the business.  It is better to spend time with the people you find interesting with the aim of building a genuine connection for your business.

Don’t Neglect The Person. Never try to neglect any person you come across because you’re not only your job, and you’re not only your networking connections. Try your best to make yourself memorable by building a good and meaningful rapport by taking an interest in the person behind the role. Talking only about “buy our product” or “join our business” can be very boring and it’s not creative for a good networker. Better push in discussion about life outside of the office, without getting too personal.  

Over Expectations. Try not to be too excited about making use of your connections. Don’t neglect them either, but expecting too much from them too quickly will be a mistake. You should realize that your connections are also busy and have their commitments also. Don’t be pushy to receive an answer after the discussion.  Avoid being nervous, and try to be in a relaxed mood. Your composure tells a lot about you and it has a psychological effect on your prospect.

Follow Through. As a network marketer, try to avoid making promises you can’t keep. Integrity is very important in any business that will stand the test of time. Try to make sure that you keep your end of the transaction genuine and follow through on what you say you’ll do because word will sure get around if you don’t. Networking business is indirectly a reciprocal professional relationship. It is what you give that you’ll expect to have in return. It can be likened to sowing a seed that will germinate in the future.                                               

Try To Reach Out. It doesn’t matter whether you’re focusing on online platforms or in the real world. What matters is to build a solid network of contacts that you can engage from time to time. Don’t let it be a forgotten issues once the contacts have been made. Keep them in mind by constantly reaching out to them, and your best to always keep the conversation going. You can be creative in the way you want to constantly engage them. It can be through e-mail or contact phone calls. It all depends on you.

Don’t Forget Your Manners: Remember who you are, and what you want to achieve. In any networking event or you’re engaging with a person or people in your network, remember your manners. It is still possible for you to have fun and be friendly, but don’t go overboard. Do you know that saying things “please” and “thank you,” can have a positive effect on your prospect, which can make all the difference you’re looking for? When you show respect for people around you and you also maintain professional etiquette, this will enable you to establish appropriate boundaries with your clients while at the same time creating the kind of relationship that will last for a long time.

Don’t forget that networking mistakes come in all shapes and sizes, but if you can avoid the above-mentioned mistakes, you’ll be ready to go very far in your networking business.
