Pregnancy results as a result of sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. To some, it is a thing of joy while for some it is not. Some women want to be pregnant and they look for it seriously while to some it comes easily. The question now is, are you prepared for it? Do you need to get pregnant? Do you know the consequences that come with being pregnant? Are you prepared to be a mother? The decision is yours to take but here are common things that come along with pregnancies if your answer is yes.

1. You Can’t Avoid The Nesting Instinct Stage:

This is the time most women naturally feel a powerful urge and motivation to prepare their home for the baby by cleaning and decorating the surroundings. Most time it happens as the due date gets closer, but women are advised not to overdo it, so as not to lead to health complications.

2. Pregnancy Comes With Problems Of Concentration: This happens more in the first trimester when tiredness and morning sickness comes on often and many women feel worn out and mentally fuzzy which affects their ability to concentrate. Concentrating ability and periods of forgetfulness also happen to even well-rested pregnant women.

3. Pregnancy Comes With Mood Swings:

Changes in the mood of pregnant women are common more during the first trimester and toward the end of the third trimester. And most women have depression during pregnancy which can be caused by pregnancy hormones that go up and down and make them feel moody. Women who experience post-menstrual syndrome are more likely to have more severe mood swings during their pregnancy.

Pregnant woman shopping for cabbage in grocery store

4. Pregnancy Comes With An Increase In Bra Size:

The first sign of pregnancy apart from morning sickness and feeling tired is an increase in breast size. The increase in the size of the breast is due to higher levels of hormones called estrogen and progesterone. To some women, this increase in breast size might continue to grow throughout their pregnancy, and this might involve the need to change their bra several times during pregnancy.

5. Pregnancy Comes With Changes In Your Skin:

Many of these effects come from hormonal changes. Increased blood volume during pregnancy provides extra blood flow to the uterus and other organs of the body. And this increased blood flow brings more blood to the vessels thus increasing oil gland secretion.

This increased oil gland secretion causes acne to be common during pregnancy because the skin’s sebaceous glands make more oil. And tiny freckles of acne that you had before pregnancy might become bigger and darker, but after childbirth, they disappear.

It is also possible to have hyperpigmentation i.e. darkening of the skin, either of the nipples, external genitalia, and anal region. This occurs because pregnancy hormones cause the body to make more pigments. Heat rash is also common during pregnancy and it can be an itchy time for a woman.

6. Pregnancy Brings Changes To Your Hair And nails:

Changes occur in most women’s hair and nails when they’re pregnant. And this change in the hair texture is due to pregnancy hormones that could make their hair grow faster and fall out less. Though these hair changes are usually not permanent. Depending on the woman, some lose their hair in the postpartum period or after they stop breastfeeding while some grow hair in unwanted places like the face, belly, or around the nipples. To some women, changes in their hair texture can make it drier or oilier while some find their hair changing color.

Changes in nails during pregnancy are similar to that in hair. These extra hormones that occur during pregnancy can make them grow faster and become stronger, though some experience their nails split and breaking more easily during pregnancy. Same as the hair, nail changes are not permanent.

7. Pregnancy Changes Your Shoe Size:

When a woman is pregnant, there’s always an extra fluid in the body system, and this causes them to have swollen feet. The need to change their shoe size to a larger one then arises. Better still, pregnant women should wear slip-on shoes or slippers when pregnant because either the slip-on shoes

or slippers can accommodate swollen feet to some extent.

8. Pregnancy Brings Changes To Your Joint Mobility: Relaxin is a hormone produced during pregnancy, and this hormone helps to prepare the pubic area and the cervix for childbirth. It also loosens the body’s ligaments thus making women less stable and prone to the risk of injury, especially in the joints of the pelvis, lower back, and knees. That is the reason why doctors always advise pregnant women to go slowly and avoid sudden jerking movements, especially when exercising or lifting objects.

9. Pregnancy Brings Varicose Veins, Hemorrhoids, & Constipation:

Varicose veins occur when blood pools in veins enlarged due to pregnancy hormones, and it is usually found in the legs and genital area. But the beauty of it is that varicose veins often disappear after pregnancy. Varicose veins can be prevented to some extent by trying the followings:-

Standing or sitting for a long period is not the best for a pregnant woman. Try to avoid or limit it.

Try to avoid wearing tight clothing. Instead, choose loose-fitting clothes.

Try to wear a support hose.

Always try to raise your feet when you sit.

Hemorrhoids and constipation are both common in pregnancy, and the best way to deal with them is to prevent them from occurring. Both of them can be prevented either by eating a fiber-rich diet, drinking plenty of liquids daily, or exercising regularly.

Pregnancy comes with all the above challenges. But when you compare the advantages of carrying your baby with the challenges involved, you’ll agree with me that none of the above challenges can be compared to you carrying your baby in your arms.

But do you need it? The choice is yours.

A cataract is the clouding of a typical clear lens of the eye. People with cataracts find it difficult to see through a cloudy lens which is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. It is more difficult to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the expression on a friend's face as a result of clouded vision caused by a cataract.

The development of most cataracts starts slowly and it does not disturb eyesight at the beginning. But with time, cataracts will interfere with your vision. The cloudiness in your vision caused by a cataract might affect only a small part of the eye's lens at the beginning, and you may not be aware of any vision loss.

Cataracts will ultimately develop in both eyes, but not at the same rate or time. It is possible for the cataract in one eye to be more advanced than the other, thereby causing a difference in vision. Naturally, as the cataract grows larger, it clouds more of your lens and this distorts the light passing through the lens, resulting in more-noticeable symptoms.

Types of cataracts:

Age-related cataracts. The majority of these types of cataracts are related to aging.

Congenital cataracts.

These types of cataracts are hereditary. There are cases where some babies are born with cataracts, while some develop theirs in childhood.

Secondary cataracts. This can occur because of an underlying disease in the body (such as diabetes). Research studies have linked secondary cataracts to the use of the steroid.

Traumatic cataracts.

Traumatic cataracts can occur when there is an injury to one or both eyes. It can manifest either right after the accident or several years later.

What Are The Symptoms Of Cataracts?

Symptoms of cataracts may include:

Blurred, clouded, or dim vision.

Increased difficulty with vision at night.

Sensitivity to light and also glare.

Need for brighter light either for reading or other activities at home.

Seeing "halos" around lights, or not seeing clearly.

Frequent changes in eyeglasses due to changes in the focal length of the contact lens.

Inability to comprehend colors.

Double or impaired vision in a single eye

How Does Cataract Occur? Most cataracts develop when aging or injury alters the cells of the tissue that makes up the eye's lens. This can lead to the proteins and fibers in the lens tissue to start breaking down, causing vision to become hazy or cloudy.

Some inherited genetic disorders that cause other health problems can also increase your risk of developing cataracts. Other eye conditions, past eye surgery, or medical conditions such as diabetes can also cause an individual to develop a cataract. It has also been scientifically confirmed that long-term use of steroid medications, too, can cause cataracts to develop.

How Can Cataracts Be Prevented: The development of cataracts depending on the age of the individual can be regarded as a typical part of aging. But steps can be taken to protect the eye and slow the process:

There are no scientifically proven methods that are used to prevent cataracts or slow down their progression. But here are a few strategies that may be of help.

Regular eye examinations. Having regular eye examinations can help detect not only cataracts but other eye problems at their earliest stages. The best advice will come from your doctor on how often you should have your eye examined.

Quit smoking. Smoke that comes from smoking harms the eye. Though this has not been scientifically proven, it’s best to avoid anything that will affect your sight.

Manage your health challenges. Any form of health challenges like diabetes that can increase the risk of developing cataracts should be well managed. Follow your treatment plan and avoid lapses.

Eat Well. Try your best to eat a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables which ensures that you're getting many vitamins and nutrients. Do you know that fruits and vegetables have many antioxidants, which help maintain the health of your eyes?

Wear sunglasses.

Ultraviolet light from the sun may contribute to the development of cataracts. By wearing sunglasses, you block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when you're outdoors from harming your eye.

Reduce alcohol consumption.

Excessive alcohol consumption can cause malfunctioning of the organs and hormones of the body, thereby increasing the risk of cataracts.

It is estimated that about 20 million people worldwide are blind due to cataracts. Statistics show that blindness from cataracts occurs in about 10 to 40 per 100,000 children in the developing world, and 1 to 4 per 100,000 children in the developed world. Cataracts occur more as you age. In the United States, it is estimated that cataracts occur in 68% of those over the age of 80 years. And this health challenge is more common in women, and less common in Hispanic and Black people.

Vitamins and supplements when used can be converted by the body to give the energy the body required. That implies that vitamins and supplements do indirectly give energy. Energy is the ability of a physical system or body to perform a task or work. Starting from the minute cells of the body to the tissues, and then to the body organs that need the energy to perform their respective functions.

This required energy comes naturally from the food we eat. Our body’s digestive system works in a way that the food we eat is been masticated and acted upon by the saliva, before moving to the stomach where it is been mixed with another set of digestive fluids (acids and enzymes). The endpoint of carbohydrate digestion is glucose, and this carbohydrate is the main source of energy from foods.

It is the work of the stomach and small intestines to absorb and release glucose into the bloodstream. The bloodstream now transports the glucose to the necessary site where it can be used immediately for energy or stored in our bodies, to be used later.

When people talk about vitamins for energy, what they’re referring to is not caffeine which can give almost transient energy. They’re referring to something like Vitamin B12, CoQ10, Magnesium, and Iron. All these play major roles in converting the food you eat into usable energy. The best sources of these vitamins/minerals are through the food you eat, but you can still have them through supplements. And these are the reasons why it’s important to get the right amount of these nutrients either from food or supplements to keep your body functioning at the optimal level.

Why Do You Need Vitamin B12 for Energy?

Vitamin B12: It helps in energy metabolism by functioning in the breakdown of the food you eat into the energy your body needs. Vitamin B12 does this as a co-factor in kick-starting the reactions of converting food, especially fats and protein, into usable energy. This is the reason why vitamin B12 is often regarded and marketed as one of the best vitamins for energy.

Vitamin B12 is also needed in the body for the proper functioning of the nervous system, including brain function, where it is needed when it comes to certain neurotransmitters like serotonin. The importance of vitamin B12 is also effective when it functions as a co-factor in making SAM-e (a compound that supports a healthy mood).

Vitamin B12 can be mainly found in foods of animal origin, the sources are:

Beef

Salmon

Milk

Turkey

Brie cheese

Eggs

Chicken

CoQ10: This helps turn carbohydrates & fats into energy your body can use. CoQ10 is not a vitamin, but a vitamin-like compound that can be made in the body and can also be obtained from food and supplements. The thought of some people that CoQ10 is one of the best vitamins for energy is wrong. It is just a coenzyme (hence the word “Co”) It is one of the essential molecules in the body which helps to kick-start the biological process the body needs.

Nearly every cell in your body contains CoQ10 which helps in converting carbohydrates and fats into energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphates i.e. the energy your cells can use). This energy generated in form of ATP is stored in your cells’ mitochondria (the “powerhouse” of each cell) and then used later to power the system in any part of the body it’s needed like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Beef, chicken, and fish stands out as the best source to get CoQ10, but can also be found in:

Canola and soybean oils

Peanuts

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Oranges

Strawberries

Eggs

Although CoQ10 can be synthesized in the body, adding a CoQ10 supplement to your daily routine can be a great way to replenish CoQ10 levels to support cellular energy production.

Magnesium: It is another essential mineral also required in the body for energy production by converting carbohydrates and fats into ATP (i.e. the energy the body can use). Apart from the structural role magnesium plays in bones and teeth, and also helping the muscles relax, many of the enzymes involved in energy production are dependent on it.

Can be found in:

Almonds

Spinach

Soymilk

Black beans

Peanut butter

Baked potatoes with the skin

Cooked brown rice

Magnesium can also be purchased as a supplement, which can be in form of magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, or magnesium glycinate.

Iron: Iron is among the key nutrient the body needs for its biological processes, and this includes energy production. Like magnesium, certain enzymes are dependent on iron for energy metabolism in converting food into energy (ATP). Red blood cell formation in the bone marrow also requires iron for its development and maturation.

Iron deficiency anemia occurs when the body lacks enough iron to support normal red blood cell production. This lack of iron in red blood cells causes a decrease in the amount of oxygen delivered to cells and impairs energy production thus leading to fatigue.

Iron deficiency anemia might manifest its symptoms in form of tiredness and fatigue, rapid heart rate, and rapid breathing after exercising. The natural source of iron can be found in both animal- and plant-based foods (as heme and nonheme iron).

Other natural food sources of iron are:

Oysters

Mussels

Beef

Chicken

Clams

Raisin bran cereal

Spinach

Tofu

White beans

Lentils

Apart from the natural sources of obtaining iron from food listed above, iron supplements are available, and these are formulated to address cases of iron deficiency anemia. Depending on your situation and needs, your health consultant will advise you better on your daily iron needs.
