Pregnancy results as a result of sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. To some, it is a thing of joy while for some it is not. Some women want to be pregnant and they look for it seriously while to some it comes easily. The question now is, are you prepared for it? Do you need to get pregnant? Do you know the consequences that come with being pregnant? Are you prepared to be a mother? The decision is yours to take but here are common things that come along with pregnancies if your answer is yes.

1. You Can’t Avoid The Nesting Instinct Stage:

This is the time most women naturally feel a powerful urge and motivation to prepare their home for the baby by cleaning and decorating the surroundings. Most time it happens as the due date gets closer, but women are advised not to overdo it, so as not to lead to health complications.

2. Pregnancy Comes With Problems Of Concentration: This happens more in the first trimester when tiredness and morning sickness comes on often and many women feel worn out and mentally fuzzy which affects their ability to concentrate. Concentrating ability and periods of forgetfulness also happen to even well-rested pregnant women.

3. Pregnancy Comes With Mood Swings:

Changes in the mood of pregnant women are common more during the first trimester and toward the end of the third trimester. And most women have depression during pregnancy which can be caused by pregnancy hormones that go up and down and make them feel moody. Women who experience post-menstrual syndrome are more likely to have more severe mood swings during their pregnancy.

Pregnant woman shopping for cabbage in grocery store

4. Pregnancy Comes With An Increase In Bra Size:

The first sign of pregnancy apart from morning sickness and feeling tired is an increase in breast size. The increase in the size of the breast is due to higher levels of hormones called estrogen and progesterone. To some women, this increase in breast size might continue to grow throughout their pregnancy, and this might involve the need to change their bra several times during pregnancy.

5. Pregnancy Comes With Changes In Your Skin:

Many of these effects come from hormonal changes. Increased blood volume during pregnancy provides extra blood flow to the uterus and other organs of the body. And this increased blood flow brings more blood to the vessels thus increasing oil gland secretion.

This increased oil gland secretion causes acne to be common during pregnancy because the skin’s sebaceous glands make more oil. And tiny freckles of acne that you had before pregnancy might become bigger and darker, but after childbirth, they disappear.

It is also possible to have hyperpigmentation i.e. darkening of the skin, either of the nipples, external genitalia, and anal region. This occurs because pregnancy hormones cause the body to make more pigments. Heat rash is also common during pregnancy and it can be an itchy time for a woman.

6. Pregnancy Brings Changes To Your Hair And nails:

Changes occur in most women’s hair and nails when they’re pregnant. And this change in the hair texture is due to pregnancy hormones that could make their hair grow faster and fall out less. Though these hair changes are usually not permanent. Depending on the woman, some lose their hair in the postpartum period or after they stop breastfeeding while some grow hair in unwanted places like the face, belly, or around the nipples. To some women, changes in their hair texture can make it drier or oilier while some find their hair changing color.

Changes in nails during pregnancy are similar to that in hair. These extra hormones that occur during pregnancy can make them grow faster and become stronger, though some experience their nails split and breaking more easily during pregnancy. Same as the hair, nail changes are not permanent.

7. Pregnancy Changes Your Shoe Size:

When a woman is pregnant, there’s always an extra fluid in the body system, and this causes them to have swollen feet. The need to change their shoe size to a larger one then arises. Better still, pregnant women should wear slip-on shoes or slippers when pregnant because either the slip-on shoes

or slippers can accommodate swollen feet to some extent.

8. Pregnancy Brings Changes To Your Joint Mobility: Relaxin is a hormone produced during pregnancy, and this hormone helps to prepare the pubic area and the cervix for childbirth. It also loosens the body’s ligaments thus making women less stable and prone to the risk of injury, especially in the joints of the pelvis, lower back, and knees. That is the reason why doctors always advise pregnant women to go slowly and avoid sudden jerking movements, especially when exercising or lifting objects.

9. Pregnancy Brings Varicose Veins, Hemorrhoids, & Constipation:

Varicose veins occur when blood pools in veins enlarged due to pregnancy hormones, and it is usually found in the legs and genital area. But the beauty of it is that varicose veins often disappear after pregnancy. Varicose veins can be prevented to some extent by trying the followings:-

Standing or sitting for a long period is not the best for a pregnant woman. Try to avoid or limit it.

Try to avoid wearing tight clothing. Instead, choose loose-fitting clothes.

Try to wear a support hose.

Always try to raise your feet when you sit.

Hemorrhoids and constipation are both common in pregnancy, and the best way to deal with them is to prevent them from occurring. Both of them can be prevented either by eating a fiber-rich diet, drinking plenty of liquids daily, or exercising regularly.

Pregnancy comes with all the above challenges. But when you compare the advantages of carrying your baby with the challenges involved, you’ll agree with me that none of the above challenges can be compared to you carrying your baby in your arms.

But do you need it? The choice is yours.

Is Sex Safe During Pregnancy?

Having sex during pregnancy is very safe. Some people think that penetration and intercourse movement during sex will harm the baby. The answer is no because your baby is protected by your abdomen and the uterus’ muscular walls. Also, the amniotic sac’s fluid in the uterus helps to cushion your baby. All of these help in protecting your baby while having sex.

Women’s experiences during pregnancy differ from one person to the other, and this also includes how they feel about sex. For some, desire fades during pregnancy. Some women are more sexually sensitive while for some, sex desire fades when they're pregnant.

Sex Safety In Pregnancy

During pregnancy, at times, sexual desire fluctuates i.e. they come and go as your body changes. It is also natural to feel self-conscious as your belly grows and some women might feel sexier with larger, fuller breasts.

Is it safe to have sex while pregnant?

Yes, it is very safe to have sex while pregnant. New couples tend to be afraid to indulge in sex while pregnant, and if even they do it, it is with caution. But the beauty of it all is that you can enjoy your sex life as frequently as you want, throughout your pregnancy. And you should remove your mind whether it will not hurt your baby or scar them while having sex during pregnancy. Sex during pregnancy is completely safe except you have one of these health challenges:

Cervical changes: The cervix is the link between the vagina and the uterus. Any changes in the cervical walls such as early dilation (opening) due to one thing or another could increase the risk of premature labor.

History of premature labor or miscarriage: Any woman with a previous history of premature delivery or miscarriage should be very careful during pregnancy. This is the reason why your doctor might advise you to refrain from intercourse, especially during the early stage of pregnancy. Research has shown that semen contains a certain amount of prostaglandins. Also during orgasm, your brain releases oxytocin and both of these hormones play a role in stimulating contractions.

Leaking: The attention of a healthcare provider or a doctor will be urgently needed if a pregnant woman sees any sign of a drip, drip, from her vagina. This could be a sign that the wall surrounding the sac where the baby grows may have been ruptured. This kind of condition could lead to an increased risk of infection.

Placenta previa: If the placenta of a pregnant woman happens to cover the cervix, sexual activity is not recommended at this stage. The reason is that it might lead to the disruption of the placenta and causes bleeding.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD): Sex is not safe during pregnancy for couples with either or both of them if they have sexually transmitted infection issues. They should abstain from unprotected sexual intercourse not until they have been treated. The reason is that untreated sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can harm your baby.

Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding: Having sex during pregnancy due to undiagnosed vagina bleeding is also not advisable not until the causes are known and taken care of. This might lead to unnecessary pregnancy complications or even terminating your baby if you continue with sex without taking care of the bleeding.

Handling Pregnancy Challenges With Ease:-

With prompt treatment and proper management, most pregnancy health challenges can be handled with ease. The most common health challenges that come with pregnancy are:-

High blood pressure

Gestational diabetes

Preeclampsia

Preterm labor

A loss of pregnancy, or miscarriage.

As early stated above most pregnancy health challenges can be easily handled with regular visits to an antenatal clinic where early diagnosis and treatment can be `accomplished.

Morning Sickness: This is one of the most common and easily visible symptoms of early pregnancy and is caused by changes in hormones. Most times, morning sickness disappears towards the end of the first 3 months. The symptoms of morning sickness are: - nausea, with or without vomiting; dry retching; aversion to certain odours and foods; and in some cases, you will witness persistent vomiting and dehydration.

Handling morning sickness is simply by making changes to your diet and having plenty of rest and it is advisable not to take any medicines in treating morning sickness without consulting your doctor. Stay hydrated by drinking fluids when morning sickness is coupled with vomiting.

Backache In Pregnancy: There are several things you can do to help prevent backache from happening during your pregnancy and to help cope with it if it has already happened. Backache during pregnancy occurs because, during pregnancy, the body’s ligament naturally becomes softer and stretches to prepare you for labor. These changes in the body’s physiology can put a strain on the pelvis, which can cause backache. The extra weight of your uterus with the increasing size of the hollow in your lower back can also contribute to having backache during pregnancy.

It is advisable to try as much as possible to avoid lifting heavy objects, and if you want to lift or pick something from the floor, try to bend your knees and keep your back straight. Sleeping on a firm mattress can also help to prevent and relieve backache.

Fatigue During Pregnancy: Hormones produced by the body during pregnancy are responsible for symptoms of feeling tired, faint, hot, and low in spirit. The best way in handling these challenges is by eating a healthy diet, doing some simple exercise, and getting plenty of rest and sleep.

Headache During Pregnancy: Most women experience headaches at various stages of their pregnancy and this occurs especially in the first and third trimesters. Apart from pregnancy hormones, headaches in early pregnancy can also be caused by an increased volume of blood your body is producing. Not getting enough sleep; low blood sugar; feeling stressed; withdrawal from caffeine; dehydration; having depression and anxiety; poor posture-particularly as your baby gets bigger can contribute to other factors that might cause a headache during pregnancy.

The following tips can be used to manage headaches and migraine during pregnancy:-

Try to get more sleep, rest well, and relax well.

Try to do simple pregnancy exercises, at worst, walking around.

Try to Practice good posture in the way you sit, stand, walk or even have sex especially late in your pregnancy

Try to eat a balanced diet anytime the urge of eaten arises.

Try using a cold pack at the back of your neck, or taking a shower in case it is a tension headache.

Try using neck and shoulder massage.

Anaemia: Anaemia is a condition where the red blood cells are lower than the normal range. Anaemia in pregnancy may cause you to feel more tired and weak than usual and also causes your skin to appear pale. During an ante-natal clinic, anaemia can be easily detected by performing routine laboratory diagnoses like Packed Cell Volume (PCV).

Diagnosis of a low Packed Cell Volume (PCV) or low Haemoglobin level signifies anaemia. Taking supplements of iron and folic acid during pregnancy may help since most cases of anaemia occur due to a deficiency.

Infections: Infections are foreign bodies in the system and they are not friendly. Whether they’re bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections; they have the ability in complicating pregnancy. Infections in pregnancy if not treated adequately can be harmful to both the mother and the baby. Most infections that occur during pregnancy are either sexually transmitted from either the spouse or improper hygiene practices, especially from the woman. Examples of these common infections that occur in pregnancy are Candidiasis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteria vaginosis, Streptococcus species (group B), and food-related parasitic infections.

Labor Complications: Complications can occur during labor and delivery. The doctor knows what to do if such a condition arises. Your doctor might need to change the process of the delivery. The ultimate goal is for the baby and the mother to be alive and healthy.

Breech Position: This occurs when the feet of the baby are positioned to be delivered before the head. This condition is not common and the statistics occur in about 4% of full-term births. Breech position can be diagnosed using ultrasound, especially in the few weeks before delivery. If diagnosed to be in this position, your doctor might try to change the position of the baby. But if the baby is still in the breech position when labor starts, most doctors do recommend a cesarean delivery.

Placenta Previa: This condition happens when the placenta is covering the cervix. Most doctors perform a cesarean delivery in this type of case.

Low Birth Weight: The importance of an ante-natal clinic cannot be overemphasized. Low birth weight mostly occurs mainly because of poor nutrition (unbalanced diet) or the use of cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs while pregnant. Babies with low birth weight have a risk of acquiring respiratory infections, defects in learning abilities, cardiac problems, or even blindness. Some babies born with low weight come out jaundiced. In this case, the babies have to stay in the hospital for adequate treatment until the pediatrician certifies the baby to be okay.

Miscarriage: Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy during the first 20 weeks while stillbirth is the loss of pregnancy after 20 weeks. At times, miscarriage happens even before a woman is aware of it and is indirectly not preventable. Rhesus factor incompatibility has been linked to one of the causes of stillbirth. If the case of rhesus incompatibility between the couples is detected in time, the woman should be given drugs to bring down the level of the antibody in the blood.

Preterm Labor: Preterm labor is the condition that occurs when you go into labor before week 37 of your pregnancy. And in this state, your baby’s organs, such as the lungs and brain might not have finished developing. Though certain medications can stop preterm labor, your doctors can also recommend bed rest to prevent your baby to be born early.

Preeclampsia: Toxemia or preeclampsia usually occurs after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and causes an increase in high blood pressure and possible kidney problems. The best treatment for preeclampsia is delivery of the baby and placenta to prevent the disease from progressing. Labor can also be induced if you’re 37-40 weeks pregnant.

But if it’s too early for your baby to be delivered, you need to monitor closely with your baby, and this will require you to be hospitalized for some time.

Leg Cramps: Leg cramps are a normal uncomfortable feature of pregnancy and at times it comes along with swelling of the legs and varicose vein. Stretching your muscle or walking around can ease cramps.

Enjoying Sex During Pregnancy

Among the things most women enjoy during pregnancy are increased sex drive and strong orgasms, especially during certain stages of pregnancy. And for most women, sex during pregnancy is perfectly safe if the pregnancy is progressing normally. With this at the back of their minds, most women find this period a time for sexual freedom.

The couples don’t think of getting pregnant again coupled with high sexual derive from the woman. What else than to enjoy themselves while it lasts? But for couples to enjoy sex during pregnancy there is a need for some adjustment depending on the stages of the pregnancy. This adjustment can be due to comfort and safety. Here are a few of them:-

1. Couples Should Put Safety First.

Safety in pregnancy is very important if you want a successful pregnancy. Any case of sexually transmitted disease (STD) should be treated with urgency, and it’s better to use a condom if there is any history of such. Having sex without a condom during pregnancy can also expose you to HIV. HIV can be transmitted to the baby in the womb, and during delivery, some sexually transmitted diseases can be transmitted to the baby.

Depending on the couple, oral sex during pregnancy is permissible but the couples should try to avoid blowing air into the vagina because it could cause an air embolism, and this is not good for the woman. Anal sex is not recommended during pregnancy because of the possibility of spreading bacteria from the rectum to the vagina.

2. Couples should experiment with new sexual positions.

The woman to try and lay on her side during sex either facing toward or away from her partner because of the enlarged belly caused by weight gain during pregnancy. It is also advisable and comfortable for the woman if she can be on top because she can control the depth of penetration.

The woman shouldn’t lie flat on her back in late pregnancy because the weight of the baby and the weight of their partner may put pressure on the inferior vena cava which is the vein that brings blood back to your heart. The woman can also put herself in a kneeling position with her hands and knees while her partner comes behind her, also in a kneeling position, or she can also sit on his lap.

3. Couples Should Try To Communicate Openly. Pregnancy should be a thing of joy. So couples should try to communicate with themselves openly to bring out the best of the moment. Ideas should flow from both parties on how to have sex during pregnancy. With proper understanding, sex can be a time of fun for both parties during pregnancy.

4. Take It Gently & Understand Your Partner:

Pregnancy is not a time to be anxious about sex, especially for new couples, nor is it a time to pressure a woman into having sex. Individual changes occur during pregnancy, and your spouse is not an exception. Try not to feel bad about changes in her body or make her feel guilty if her libido is not as strong as before.

5. Don’t Disturb Your Mind:

The worry that goes on in the minds of most couples about whether sexual intercourse during pregnancy will harm their baby is not called for. God has designed the anatomy of a woman in such a way that your baby is well protected in the uterus during pregnancy.

And because of the positioning of the cervix, the penis cannot touch the baby, not to talk of harming the baby. Couples are therefore advised to focus on what is more important for them to fulfill their heart desire and enjoy their sex life during pregnancy rather than disturbing their minds with negative thoughts.

6. Couples Should Avoid Screens In Bed:

Staying close to your partner in bed without any screen should be a thing of joy no matter the changes in her body. That enlarged belly of your partner comes once in a while and it occurs because of what you deposited into her. Couples should understand that physical intimacy grows out of an emotional connection.

7. Cultivate a Positive Mind-Set about Sex During Pregnancy:

What you think is what you actualize. Having positive thoughts about sex during pregnancy enables you to perform the act while pregnant without any fear. Couples need to create time set aside for sex and closeness, as well as mental attention devoted to positive thoughts about sex. This act even helps the baby to grow well.

8. Using Lubricant Should Not Be Out Of Place:

At times, pregnancy hormones can cause vaginal dryness. When this happens, couples can still go ahead and enjoy their sex life by using lubricant. The lubricant can even make it more pleasurable and erotic.

Sex during pregnancy depends primarily on the knowledge of the couple about pregnancy sex safety. It might come as a complicated matter for some mothers and fathers-to-be, but the couple must be made to understand that sex during pregnancy will not cause any damage to their health or the baby.

Pregnancy brings normally with it a lot of bodily changes, one of which is an increased libido. Starting from the first to the third trimester, you will expect to see a lot of fluctuations in a pregnant woman’s libido. It is advisable to adapt to the changes in your body and indulge in lovemaking with your partner because of its benefits and poses no harm whatsoever to you and your baby.

Benefits of Having Sex While Pregnant Unknown To The Couple?

1. Orgasms Can Be Intensified

During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone are the two main hormones that are released and these help women experience better orgasms. Increased estrogen level in the blood leads to more blood flow to the pelvic area, thereby arousing a woman. And because increased sensitivity in the area helps women achieve better orgasms easily, longer and stronger. Apart from experiencing increased orgasms and increased sex drive during pregnancy, the chemical released from the brain also helps to ease pain and increase immunity.

2. Sex Is Indirectly An Exercise

Engaging in sex is indirectly engaging in exercise. You exercise the muscles of the waist, legs, hands, etc. during active sex, and this helps burn out calories. Burning out small, small calories of fat can help lower blood pressure. One of the benefits of sex during pregnancy is been noticed in the area of sleep. You just find yourself more relaxed after sex, and you’ll fall asleep easily.

3. It Helps To Strengthen The Pelvic Floor Muscles

The strength of the pelvic muscles is been determined during vaginal delivery, and sex during pregnancy helps to achieve this. Especially in the 3rd trimester, sex during pregnancy helps strengthens the pelvic floor muscles. Women should have regular sex during pregnancy as this also helps keeps these muscles toned, and strong, and prepared them to deal with the task of a vaginal delivery.

4. Enhanced Self-Confidence

Because women experiences changes in their body during pregnancy couples with fluctuating hormones, some feel differently about their body. Many women feel and think that they are no more attractive when they are pregnant. These thoughts are just negative. Pregnancy brings its type of beauty unknown to the woman but appreciated by their spouse. But frequent sexual intercourse with your partner can help boost your self-esteem, make you feel like yourself again, and brings you closer to your partner.

5. Fewer bathroom breaks

Sex during pregnancy helps the mother to minimize frequent visits to the bathroom to urinate. Some pregnant women even leak urine when they sneeze or laugh. And as the baby grows and gets bigger, pressure is exerted on the bladder and this makes it more uncomfortable resulting in frequent visits to the bathroom to pass urine. The good news is that sex during pregnancy helps to strengthen the pelvic muscles in readiness for labor and can also help to prevent the unnecessary flow of urine.

6. Complication prevention

According to a Danish study, frequent sex during pregnancy may help prevent preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a complication in pregnancy that has the possibility of affecting about 5% of all women and it is characterized by hypertension which also affects the lining of the blood vessels of the kidney, lungs, brain, and liver. It can also lead to multiple organ failure, convulsions, coma, and possibly death. Some research studies believe that there is a specific protein found in sperm that can regulate and strengthen the women’s body’s immune system. Because the causes of preeclampsia are not scientifically proven, women while pregnant are always advised to attend the prenatal clinic to avoid any complications.

7. Lowered blood pressure

Sex during pregnancy helps lowers blood pressure. During sex, hormones are released after post-orgasm, and this helps the entire body goes into a relaxed state. The relaxed state can promote sleep which eventually has the possibility of decreasing blood pressure. High blood pressure during pregnancy can be serious for both you and your baby. Since sex during pregnancy can lower blood pressure, why not enjoy yourself and achieve a healthy pregnancy life that will be beneficial both to you and your baby?

8. Stress reduction

Sex during pregnancy acts as stress reduction therapy. All the worries during pregnancy like work, finances, labor, baby safety, and how your life will change after your baby is born, etc., are normal, but oxytocin, the love hormone that your body releases after an orgasm, helps to cushion some of the stress of pregnancy and this also enables you to sleep better.

9. It Aids Circulation In the Body

Sex during pregnancy helps to aid good and proper blood circulation. Due to the requirements of the mother and the growing baby, the blood supply doubles during pregnancy to meet their needs. Since sex is indirectly an exercise, it thus activates the cells of the body to function at the optimal level, thereby increasing blood circulation. And increased blood circulation promotes an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrition to the fetus which in turn helps in the growth and development of the baby.

10. Improves and Boosts Immunity

Sex during pregnancy helps to boost and improve immunity. It is a fact that immunity can often dwindle in a pregnant woman, and that is the reason why health practitioners always prescribe a healthy diet and lifestyle to pregnant women so that they can avoid illness and have a safe delivery. Research studies believe that sexual activity increases the levels of IgA antibodies thus resulting in improve immunity and providing resistance to infections.

11. It Improves Bonding Between Couples

Sex during pregnancy improves the bonding between couples. There is a release of endorphins during sex in pregnancy and this helps to reduce stress levels thus providing safety for the baby and mother. Sex during pregnancy also increases the production of oxytocin, and this hormone is naturally responsible for attachment and love. So if you have sex frequently with your spouse, oxytocin can help stimulate better bonding and intimacy between partners.

12. Accelerates Postpartum Recovery

Orgasm achieved during sex while pregnant helps to strengthen and prepare the pelvic muscles for birth and also speeds up postpartum recovery. Any woman who cannot involve herself with kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles can achieve a similar result in frequent sex while pregnant.

13. Aids in Inducing Labour and Easy Delivery

Regular sex during pregnancy helps in pelvic muscle contraction and opens the cervix. This helps in vaginal delivery and makes the process of labor. Some health providers even advise having sex closer to your date of delivery as this helps to induce labor.

The ideal nutrients needed during pregnancy are protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy types of fat like omega-3s, and vitamins and minerals.

The term "pregnancy" is used to describe the time when a fetus develops inside a woman's uterus or womb. The average pregnancy lasts roughly 40 weeks or just over 9 months from the last menstrual cycle to delivery. Trimesters are the names given to the three phases of pregnancy by healthcare professionals.

Naturally, the body of a woman goes through lots of physical and hormonal changes during pregnancy. You'll need to choose healthy foods from a range of sources to sustain both you and your developing baby. Eating a nutritious, balanced diet can make you feel better and provide you and your baby with what you need.

You must consume all the nutrients you require because food is your baby's primary source of nutrition. During pregnancy, your body needs extra vitamins and macronutrients to support both you and your developing baby. While macronutrients are nutrients that provide calories, or energy, micronutrients are dietary components like vitamins and minerals that are only needed in relatively small amounts.

Pregnant Woman

The basic foods are fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. During pregnancy, you'll need to consume more of each of these nutritional types in appropriate proportions. Following are some broad recommendations on a few significant nutrients that should be modified according to your needs:

Nutrients Daily Requirements for Pregnant Women

Calcium…………………………………….1200 milligrams(mg)

Folate……………………………………….600 – 800 micrograms (mcg)

Iron…………………………………………27 milligrams (mg)

Most pregnant women can meet these higher-than-average nutritional requirements by choosing a diet rich in a variety of nutritious foods, including:

vitamins and minerals

healthy types of fat like omega-3s

protein

complex carbohydrates

How To Achieve This Daily Nutritious Requirements:

To meet the nutritional needs of both you and your infant, eat a range of foods. It's only slightly more extreme than a typical healthy eating schedule. According to current advice, you should continue eating regularly during the first semester, and then increase your daily calorie intake by 350 during the second trimester and 450 during the third, as your baby grows.

As much as possible, stay away from processed junk foods. For instance, soda and chips have no nutritional benefits. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean meats like chicken, fish, beans, or lentils will be better for you and your child. This does not imply that you must abstain from all of your favorite foods when you are pregnant. Just make sure to balance them out with healthy foods to ensure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need.

Protein: For a baby's tissues and organs, including the brain, to develop properly, protein is essential. Additionally, during pregnancy, it encourages the formation of uterine and breast tissue. It even contributes to your rising blood supply, which enables your baby to receive more blood.

Your need for protein will rise throughout pregnancy with each trimester. According to research, pregnant women's protein intake should be much higher than the current recommendations. Depending on your weight and the trimester you're in, you'll need to consume between 70 and 100 g of protein every day. To determine how much you require specifically, consult your doctor. Protein-rich foods include:

beans

nuts

chicken

lean beef and pork

salmon

peanut butter

cottage cheese

Calcium: Calcium supports the development of your baby's bones and controls how much fluid your body uses. Women who are pregnant need 1,000 mg of calcium every day, ideally in two doses of 500 mg. To augment conventional prenatal vitamins, you'll probably need more calcium. Calcium-rich foods include:

cheese

yogurt

milk

low-mercury fish and seafood

dark green, leafy vegetables

Folate: A crucial role in lowering the incidence of neural tube abnormalities is played by folic acid, commonly known as folate. Spina bifida and anencephaly are examples of severe birth abnormalities that impair the baby's brain and spinal cord. Daily folate requirements for pregnant women are 600 to 800 mcg. Foods that contain folate include:

eggs

nuts

dried beans and lentils

liver

nuts and peanut butter

dark green, leafy vegetables

Iron: Blood flow is boosted by iron when combined with sodium, potassium, and water. This makes sure that both you and your baby are getting enough oxygen. You should consume 27 mg of iron daily, ideally with some vitamin C to boost absorption. Dark green, leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, fortified loaves of bread or cereals, lean beef, and chicken eggs are all excellent providers of this nutrient.

Other considerations: Choline, sodium, and B vitamins are among the additional nutrients you'll need to stay healthy and strong during your pregnancy. Along with a healthy diet, it's crucial to get your eight glasses of water a day minimum and take prenatal vitamins. Certain nutrients, such as folate, iron, and choline, are difficult to get in sufficient levels through food alone. Be sure to discuss which prenatal vitamins you should take with your doctor.

Kedi healthcare has a product named VITAPREGO. This product provides the essential nutritional benefits needed before, during, and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy occurs as a result of sex between a man and a woman, resulting in the woman carrying an unborn baby in her womb. Pregnancy is a special experience every woman goes through and it also comes with certain health benefits!

When a woman becomes pregnant, natural changes occur in their body which they have to embrace, and these changes have beneficial factors for their body, brain, and even their sex life.

What are these benefits?

1. Pregnancy Ensures Better Sex Life:

During pregnancy especially in the second trimester, women experience greater sensitivity during sex and are prone to having orgasms that occur as a result of increased blood flow to the pelvic area. Testosterone; progesterone and estrogen are the major hormones produced during pregnancy, and they play a significant role in spicing up your sex life.

2. Pregnancy Promotes Healthier Heart: Research studies have shown that one of the leading causes of heart disease in women is caused by lack of adequate estrogen in the body. During pregnancy, your baby produces both testosterone and estrogen thus increasing the level of estrogen in your body thereby decreasing the risks of heart disease.

3. Menstrual Periodic Cramps Decreases After Delivery:

Menstrual periodic cramps have been reported by most women to decrease considerably after delivery, especially if it is a normal delivery. The reason behind this might be because the uterus stretched while delivering the baby and this stretching of the uterus causes easier and more punctual periods later on after delivery. The second reason might be the elimination of the hormone (Prostaglandin) receptors sites in the mother’s uterus that control the contraction of labor during delivery.

After childbirth and breastfeeding, your menstrual cycle will resume naturally with time. And some women have found that their menstrual pain ceases altogether after pregnancy and childbirth.

The Benefits of Pregnancy

4. Pregnancy Reduce The Risk Of Cancer:

Breastfeeding cannot be ignored when it comes to the health benefits of pregnancy. Research studies have shown that it lowers a woman’s risk of having breast cancer. This can be connected to two reasons: - first, more pregnancies signify fewer periods, and these, in turn, limit your exposure to estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are produced by your ovaries and they can stimulate cell growth which can increase a woman’s risk of having breast cancer.

The change that takes place during pregnancy and breastfeeding enables the breast cells to be resistant and immune to transforming into cancer cells.

5. Pregnancy Helps to Reduce The Risk of Multiple Sclerosis (MS):

Multiple sclerosis is a condition that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, and these health issues have been noted to be on the increase in women that have fewer kids. But research studies have proved that having a baby cuts your risk of developing this autoimmune disorder in half.

6. Pregnancy Helps Your Hair To Get Thicker:

Hair loss is common in both women and men, but normally, women lose about 50-100 hairs a day. But during pregnancy, hormones that are produced in the body as a result of pregnancy help prolong their growth cycle. The endpoint is that fewer hairs fall out from the hair root and there is an increase in the percentage of hairs that are growing.

Some women also have noticed that their hair becomes thicker and more lustrous, but during pregnancy, this does not happen to everyone.

7. Pregnancy Helps Your Nails To Grow Stronger & Thicker:

The same thing that happens to your hair while pregnant applies to your nails. It is the same hormones produced during pregnancy that enhance the change which enables the nails to grow faster at times become a bit brittle. But these changes are not permanent.

8. Pregnancy Helps Your Boobs To Get Bigger:

Pregnancy comes with an increase in the size of the breast which is always the first visible sign. And because of increased levels of hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in the body especially during the first trimester, the breast tends to become swollen and enlarged. The choice of enjoying having big boobs during pregnancy depends on the individual. Some women have noticed continuous growth of their breasts throughout their pregnancy while some don’t.

9. Pregnancy Helps Couples To Get Closer:

Pregnancy strengthens the love between couples to become stronger. Seeing the product of having sex with your partner brings a sense of joy which lets couples get closer. Also, the anticipation of having a baby and bringing another person like them into the world can bring them even closer together.

Another aspect of why pregnancy brings couples together is the helping hands the husband gives to the mum-to-be in the area of helping with cleaning, preparing meals, or taking care of small things at home which ordinarily is the duty of the wife.

10. Pregnancy Brings Energy Surges For Nesting:

Many women when pregnant experience the nesting urge. The urge to prepare their home for the baby by cleaning and decorating or even tidying kitchen cupboards or wardrobes becomes so strong. But the advice for women is that they should not overdo it.

11. Pregnancy Heightened Your Sense Of Perfection:

Because of the sensitivity, most women experience during pregnancy also affects their perception of taste and smell. This increased sense of perception could be related to the presence of estrogen in the body system when a woman is pregnant.

12. Pregnancy Ensures Self-Confidence:

Some women feel better and think they are more mature as a woman after pregnancy. Childbirth to some women has been compared to marathon running which has finally come to an end. And what ensures their confidence in the knowledge that their body is creating a whole new person and delivering him or her into the world. This joy unspeakable makes them strong to endure any pain and gives them self-confidence as a woman.

Overview

Pregnancy loss or miscarriage is a condition that occurs when a pregnant woman cannot successfully carry the unborn baby in her womb till the day of delivery. The spontaneous loss of pregnancy mostly occurs before the 12th week. Because some pregnancy loss occurs very early, it is a bit difficult to pin down the statistics, but gynecologists confirmed that at least about 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage.

Some pregnancy loss can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle, and this can be before and during pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of pregnancy loss?

Signs and Symptoms of pregnancy loss might include:

Vaginal spotting or bleeding that progress from light to heavy.

Cramps.

Abdominal pain.

Lower backache which can be from mild to severe

Uncommon vagina discharge like fluids or tissues.

Any woman experiencing the above symptoms should please contact her healthcare provider in time because there is a possibility that the pregnancy can be saved. There have been known cases of women who have vaginal spotting or bleeding in the first trimester and they still go on to have successful pregnancies.

How To Reduce The Risk Of Pregnancy Loss?

1. Good/Bad Hand Hygiene

Infections generally can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death, and the best way to avoid contracting any of these infectious diseases, either bacterial or viral is to practice good hand hygiene and make sure your partner is disease free.

Try and practice washing your hand using soap and warm water.

Before and after eating.

After visiting and using the restroom

Anytime you come close to anyone who is sick

After handling public things like money, doorknobs, shopping carts, etc.

2. Quit Smoking

Smoking has been proven over time to be a major health risk, not only to pregnant women but also include men. It affects the bronchioles of the lungs, and the nicotine content harms the brain which indirectly affects the nervous system of the unborn baby.

It also increases the possibility of having serious health issues like cancer, lung disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Statistics have proved that women who smoke are more likely to experience pregnancy loss, stillborn babies, preterm delivery, or low birth weight infant than women who don’t.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is also more common in women who smoke than those who don’t.

3. Be Careful in the Kitchen – Be Careful At Home

Pregnancy loss at times is caused by food-borne illnesses like listeria. During ante-natal clinics, pregnant women are routinely advised to avoid the foods like undercooked meats and unpasteurized cheeses. The precaution is good, but they are not the only possible sources of contracting this food-borne illness. Safe food handling is very important for women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. They need to:-

Wash their hands before and after handling raw foods with antiseptic soap and water.

Avoid undercooked meat, fish, and eggs.

Avoid bacteria food multiplications by refrigerating leftovers promptly.

Avoid prolonging the use or freezing of your meat and fish for at least one to two days of purchase.

After any purchase, try to thoroughly wash fresh produce.

4. Get Vaccinated

Some women believed that when they get vaccinated against any flu attack, they might lose their pregnancy. But studies show no increased risk of miscarriage after the flu vaccination. Regardless of any stage of your pregnancy, an inactivated influenza vaccine is highly recommended.

The H1N1 strain, in particular, is more fatal to pregnant women than others which is the reason why they are at high risk when they contact with this flu while pregnant. High fever should be avoided during pregnancy because it is also associated with neural tube defects.

COVID-19 infection during pregnancy might lead to giving birth to premature babies. Covid-19 precautions have to be adhered to during pregnancy; otherwise, the result might be pregnancy loss.

5. It Is Better To Lose Weight Before Conceiving

It is advisable to lose weight before getting pregnant because of the effect on both the mother and the baby. Most times, pregnancy just comes without notice. This is where you have to watch what you eat while pregnant so that you will not have the case of being overweight. Obesity has been linked to many health problems even while not pregnant. It tends to increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer, not to mention pregnancy complications like premature birth, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and all types of pregnancy loss.

6. Eat Right

What you eat determines to some extent how healthy you’re. Eating a healthy balanced diet is not just only for people who’re trying to lose weight, it’s for everyone. And that includes pregnant women. Both the mother and the unborn baby in the womb need adequate balanced nutrients to be in optimal health conditions. Research has found that pregnancy complications can be reduced to the barest minimum by eating the right food at the right time.

7. Start Prenatal Care

It’s very important to attend an ante-natal clinic if pregnant women want to have a successful pregnancy. Health issues don’t have to be taken for granted and don’t assume that you know it all. The advice from your doctor may uncover some health problems or pregnancy complications you aren’t aware of, which could lead to pregnancy loss.

8. Take Your Medications

Pregnancy loss has been associated with different types of chronic health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, lupus, etc. If you know that you’re pregnant and you’re suffering from a certain illness, the best thing for you is to confide with your doctor and take adequate medications recommended to you. This will not only keep you healthy, but it will also prevent any possibility of pregnancy loss.

Routine medications during ante-natal clinic are very important if you want your pregnancy to be successful. Medical practitioners view successful pregnancy as how healthy the mother and the baby in the womb are until the point of delivery. So any pregnant woman should be conscious of this fact and they should take their routine medication religiously.

9. Have Safe Sex

The truth is that there are cases of babies born with different types of diseases which they inherit from their mothers. This might result from sexually transmitted diseases like staphylococcus aureus (bacteria), chlamydia, and syphilis which can cause pregnancy loss, stillbirth, neonatal death, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy. It is best to stay with your partner and maintain the sex life you’re used to than risk pregnancy loss.

The way and method you have sex while pregnant also determines the safety of your pregnancy. Too much aggressiveness during sex should be minimized. Please play it safe.

10. Avoid Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption for pregnant women is not recommended. Apart from the inhibitory effect, it has on drug metabolism; it also has a risk of developing fetal alcohol syndrome. Although this reason for avoiding alcohol is known to some people, it also carries the potential risk of pregnancy loss or stillbirth, especially when alcohol consumption is much more frequent.

What Are Fibroid

Uterine fibroids which are also called myomas or leiomyomas are also benign noncancerous tumors of muscle tissue in the uterus. Over multiplication of a single muscle cell in the wall of the uterus can grows to form a fibroid which is a noncancerous tumor. Fibroid, because of its growth in an unfavorable position or area in the uterus tends to change the shape or size of the uterus and sometimes the cervix (lower part of the uterus).

Fibroid usually grow and are found in or around the body of the uterus, but sometimes you find them in the cervix. Sometimes you can have floating fibroid i.e. it is not attached to the walls of the uterus, but some are attached to the uterus by a stalk (pedunculated). Few are found attached to ligaments and organs that are closed to the uterus such as the bladder and bowel. Fibroid rarely grow outside the pelvic cavity.

Can fibroid affect your fertility?

It is not common for fibroid to cause infertility but depending on their size and location, some fibroid do cause infertility. For example, it can interfere with the sperm’s inability to get to the egg for fertilization. It is also possible for fibroid to affect fertility if they’re positioned in the uterus where the baby needs to be during pregnancy. Most times when this occurs, doctors will always advise leaving fibroid while the pregnancy will be monitored.

Fibroid are that are embedded in the submucosal, can affect fertility. Fibroid most time does not affect ovulation, but if the fibroid is in the submucosal, it can make it harder for your uterus to support conception and maintain pregnancy. Sometimes this type of fibroid can cause pregnancy loss.

How do fibroid cause infertility?

Fibroid that are embedded in the uterus can cause infertility in the following ways:

There is a possibility of changing the shape of the cervix and this can affect the number of sperm that enters the uterus.

Has the possibility of changing the shape of the uterus and this can interfere with the movement of the sperm or embryo.

It can block the fallopian tubes.

The size of the lining of the uterine cavity can be affected by the presence of fibroid.

It can decrease the uterine cavity’s blood flow and this can affect an embryo from sticking to the uterine wall when it’s growing.

What are the effects of fibroid on pregnancy?

During pregnancy, most women don’t experience the effect of fibroid apart from few cases of complication. The most common complication of fibroid during pregnancy is pain and these results from fibroid larger than 5 centimeters and who are in their last two trimesters.

It is also of note that during pregnancy, fibroid can facilitate premature delivery or miscarriage and this often happens when the baby’s position in the uterus is altered. In case you’re unfortunate to have fibroid during pregnancy, the best you can do is to discuss the birth plan options with your doctor. Most confirmed cases of women affected with fibroid during pregnancy (depending on the size) opt for a cesarean section to deliver their baby.

During an ante-natal clinic in early pregnancy, it's not uncommon to diagnose a patient with pre-existing conditions of fibroid. This early detection allows the doctor to know how to manage the pregnancy till the point of delivery. While diabetes and high blood pressure are the common focus during an ante-natal clinic, but 1% to 10% of expectant moms are found to have uterine fibroid at prenatal ultrasound diagnosis. Fibroid from pregnancy to delivery can cause several complications which are:-

Fetal risks

During pregnancy, the risk to the growing baby is always low. But large or multiple fibroid we'll watch closely for a few potential concerns:

Abnormal placenta:Placenta previa i.e. implantation of the placenta over the cervix and placental abruption i.e. premature separation of the placenta from the uterus has been associated with fibroid. How do you diagnose this? During antenatal clinic by the use of ultrasound to check the placenta.

Fibroid growth/Fetal growth:According to research studied, two-thirds of fibroid likely will grow or shrink during pregnancy and if it occurs, it's typically during the first trimester. You can use ultrasound to monitor changes in the uterus and evaluate the growth of your baby in comparison to your fibroid. Researches have not pinned down the correlation between fibroid and fetal growth restriction.

Breach baby position:At times, this breach position occurs in pregnancy when fibroid limit the space in the uterus. This can result in your baby breached bottom down instead of head down. Ultrasound and a physical exam can be used to monitor the baby's position, especially as you get closer to your due date of delivery. A cesarean section (C-section) might be recommended if your baby is not head down.

Preterm delivery: The size of the fibroid might cause stress on the uterus. And continuous stress on the uterus might lead to preterm contractions or premature rupture of membranes and subsequent delivery.

The complication of fibroid in pregnancy to potential labor and delivery includes things as:

Cervical blockage:When the lower part of the uterine area is crowded with objects like bulky fibroid, it might block or narrow the opening of the birth canal. This kind of obstruction can lead to the risk of needing a C-section.

Poor contracting:When the normal functions of the uterine tissue are disrupted because of the presence of fibroid in it, this may result in weak contractions. And this can finally result in difficulty to reach complete cervical dilation during labor and may call for C-section delivery.

Postpartum hemorrhage:This condition occurs when the uterus is unable to contract normally after delivery thereby making the uterine blood vessels that feed the placenta continues to bleed. When this occurs, the attention of the medical staff has to be notified because excessive bleeding can lead to gross anemia.

Vaginal delivery is often possible and is generally preferred by some in other to avoid the risks associated with C-sections. But if you have fibroid and wish to start a family, the best is to discuss with your health consultant about your options for treatment and risks management. Your wise consultation and decision with your health consultant will give you the courage to sail through your pregnancy (despite the fibroid) from the early stage to delivery.

Although it is difficult to prevent fibroid, a healthy lifestyle can minimize the chances of if developing.

Birth control has a beneficial effect on women other than pregnancy that some don’t know about. Hormonal birth control has been very useful to many women in the area of preventing unwanted pregnancy. Some women cannot do without it, and to some, it has shaped their lifestyle in the way they want to live.

Most of the birth control methods, the non-hormonal, the hormonal, the pill, IUDs, implants, and patches, offer a range of benefits apart from pregnancy control.

These benefits of birth control don’t even need to be involved with sex. Women who know what they want to achieve embrace the use of it with confidence. The type of birth control methods you are using does not matter in this case. Whether short term or long term birth control, there are always many options to choose from other than the pill.

All these methods have potential benefits of using birth control other than preventing pregnancy. The beauty of current contraceptive pills is that estrogens now have low content value.

Birth Control Methods

The 10 Benefits of Using Birth Control Other Than Pregnancy Are:-

Birth control Helps To Regulate The Menstrual Cycle:-

The use of hormonal birth control methods might balance the hormonal fluctuations which happen throughout your cycle. Dr. B. Gray who is a professor of Obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in conjunction with his colleagues found that the main reasons women use birth control for non-contraceptive purposes is due to problematic menstrual cycles.

Most women with irregular menstrual cycles might not be ovulating normally. But when they start using birth control pills, their menstrual cycles could be regulated to function normally again.

The normal average menstrual cycle is 28 days. To some, it can range from 21-35 days. In case your menstrual cycle is shortened to 21 days, that is considered irregular. The function of birth control is to stop ovulation. That means all the symptoms associated with normal ovulation when taking birth control are circumvented. Thus, the proper use of birth control methods help women in regulating or stabilizing their menstrual cycle.

2. Birth Control Stops Your Flow:-

Depending on the birth control of choice, most birth control methods used to stop blood flow during periods are the hormonal IUD and Depo- Provera. Though some school of thought says that birth control affects fertility and cause weight gain. Weight gained using birth control at the onset is minimal, which will be shed off with time. There are no proven facts that confirm that birth control affects fertility. But the truth of it is no medication that does not have its advantages and disadvantages. The best advice on any issue of health is to confide with your doctor.

3. Birth Control Reduces Menstrual Pains:-

Painful menstrual pain is also known as dysmenorrhea and is the most common menstrual disorder in women. Almost half populations of women experience this type of pain especially during their first two days of the period. Birth control pills and the IUD which contain Estrogen and Progestin can be used in conquering the effects of dysmenorrhea.

Dysmenorrhea occurs when the levels of prostaglandins (a chemical in the body with hormone-like qualities) are high. As the level of prostaglandins increases in the lining of the uterus, pain tends to occur. However, as the lining is shed, pain decreases. So the use of birth control prevents this to happen.

4. Birth Control Takes Care Of Acne And Small Body Hair Growth:-

Acne caused by the hormone-related activity of androgen triggers oil glands in the skin to buildup. According to the American Academy of a dermatologist, birth control pill can be a useful tool in combating hormonal acne. Androgen is a male sex hormone. And pills which decreased androgenic activity help decreased the level of androgen in the woman system, which tends to improve acne.

This is not a guaranteed way of treating acne. Ladies should be aware that not all birth control methods are effective for treating acne. The use of a complementary combination of one or two brings a good result. You still need the advice of your doctor to achieve the best result.

5. Birth Control Helps In Alleviating PCOS, PMS, & PMDD Conditions:-

PCOS which means Polycstic Ovary Syndrome, is a condition that’s diagnosed for women with (1) irregular menstrual cycles, (2) a lack of menstrual cycles, (3) signs of excess male hormones (Androgen). PCOS can be managed by the use of birth control if there are no other underlying causes of it.

PMS, on the other hand, occurs when mood changes in women during menstrual periods. PMDD which is an extreme version of PMS is both caused by hormonal fluctuations before or during the menstrual week. The majority of the birth control methods used to stop ovulation serve as a beneficial factor. Either you use the pill, the patch, the ring, and injections, they all point to the same benefit. They all help to alleviate both the PMS and PMDD symptoms.

6. Birth Control Reduces The Risk Of Uterine Cancer

Hormonal birth control also has some long-term benefits. Statistics revealed that women who take combination birth control pills were 50 percent less likely to get uterine cancer. The combination of the birth control hormone tends to balance the side effect of each other, making the uterine wall viable. These effects can last for a very long time even if you have stopped using the pill.

7. Birth Control Reduces The Risk Of Ovarian Cyst.

Ovarian cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs that are formed in your ovaries during ovulation. You can’t have any serious complications through them, but they can be painful at times. Some women with PCOS have a large number of small cysts in their ovaries, thereby preventing ovulation. Hormonal birth control can prevent these cysts from forming inside the ovaries. Sometimes they also stop former cysts from re-growing.

8. Birth Control Helps In Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue lining the uterus grows in other places apart from the uterus. It is a painful condition and it might result in bleeding during your period. When the tissue bleeds in places where blood can’t easily get out of the body, it causes pain and inflammation. Because hormonal birth control helps in skipping this process, it can be added as a benefit of using birth control.

9. Birth control Reduce The Risk Of Anemia

During the menstrual flow period, some women experience very heavy bleeding. Any time you have heavy bleeding; there is always the loss of blood. This can result in what is called anemia. This is a condition when you have low red blood cells in your system.

Red blood cells it the transport medium of the body. When it is low, oxygen and digested food can’t be carried to their required destinations in the body. This can lead to weakness and fatigue. The cases of anemia can adequately be prevented by the use of hormonal birth control methods. It enables you to stay strong, healthy without any symptoms of menstrual disorder.

10. Birth Control Helps In managing Migraines

Migraine is an intense type of headache that affects most people especially women. Hormonal changes might be the major trigger cause for migraines in some women. Experts in the field of gynecologists think menstrual migraines are linked to a drop in estrogen and progesterone. Because you’re on birth control methods either as a continuous pill, implant, or IUD, or injection, it can help to avoid this drop.

With the other benefits of using birth control listed above, is it only used to prevent pregnancy? I believed the questions have been answered.
